OUR STORY

Our community has been firmly rooted in Santa Barbara since 1913 when pioneering first generation, or Issei, Japanese Buddhist immigrants came together to hear the Buddhist teachings under the auspices of the Guadalupe Buddhist Church. A decade later, our first temple building was established in the Presidio area and in 1966 we moved to our current location on Montecito Street.

Unlike other forms of Buddhism, our school, Jodo Shinshu, is non-monastic and is designed for everyday people. Our dedicated members, or sangha, have kept the Buddhist teachings alive in Santa Barbara for generations despite war, relocation, and other hardships.

Whether you are a lifelong Buddhist, want to reconnect with your Buddhist roots, or are a newcomer we welcome you!

DHARMA SERVICES

We offer monthly services to listen to and learn about the dharma, the timeless Buddhist teachings about wisdom and compassion.

We meet on the second Sunday of each month at 10 am,

A typical service includes:

  • Opening greetings
  • Reflection with the calling bell
  • Reading of the names of ancestors who have passed away that month and incense burning
  • Dharma message
  • Reading from Buddhist Scriptures
  • Closing reflection

LUNCH &LEARN

After our monthly services we invite you to our Lunch and Learn Series. These are interactive workshops that explore different topics in Buddhism over a nourishing lunch and other refreshments. The current series explores Buddhist themes in pop culture through hit TV shows like Mad Men, The Good Place, and more.

QIGONG CLASSES

Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”) is a gentle, holistic practice that combines slow movements, breath control, and meditation to cultivate and balance the body’s vital energy, known as qi. Qigong promotes physical health, mental clarity, and emotional calm.

Led by a Certified Integral Qigong & Tai Chi instructor, our classes meet weekly on Mondays at 9:00 am and 10:30 am.

FUNERALS

Grieving for a deceased love one can be difficult. Our temple offers Jodo Shinshu Buddhist funerals and memorial services. Arrangements can be made with our supervising minister.
